Robots that do... Something...

Personally I think that robots this days are just spending too much money to do nothing, or something that is not so spectacular. Ok. I know that this will raise some eyebrows around the world, and part of that could be my fault too. I teach robotics to teenagers using Lego Mindstorms. I am aware of the hard work that is to create and program a successful robot, in small scale of course. But again, a lot of videos and stories I´m watching around the net is about robots that play music, robots that are designed to be industrial workers doubling as DJ´s, drummer bots and robots that were created to teach in dancing class. I want to remind you that those robots costs hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars to be made, and years in the making so why not invest in robots that are more useful? Be more creative people! The world is waiting... And the evolution is way slow...

The sky of England has a new camera for spying their citizens. The “Hicam Microdrone” is a helicopter set to fly at 500 meters high by remote control or by autonomous GPS flight. It has night vision images so it can record videos at night. The German company originally made this artifact for use on military forces but the British police think this is a better use :) They´re going to test for 3 months on the streets. I hope it doesn´t fall from the sky on someone´s head... Ouch.

This is great news! Panasonic just announced their new model o Lumix cameras, the DMC-FX100. Besides the CCD with 12.2 megapixel (Nice :) ), the improved feature is the resolution to record video. Normally the standard definition to this kind of camera is 640x480 at 30 fps, but this new model shoots video at WGA resolution which is 848x480 at 30 fps. If you dont care for the video smoothlyng playng then you might consider changing the resolution to its full 1280x720 (HDTV :)) at 15 fps, direct to SDHC/SD cards.

Besides the lack of information on this product, we can see that this is a light table that has a camera above it to take picture from the object that is set on the table. When you scan the object it becomes a picture that can be rescaled and moved in the table/screen. You can even make animation with it. Very cool!
The only problem is the washed colors. Maybe in the future the colors will become more vivid.
